The cast for Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock series for Prime Video is beginning to take shape, as it has officially found its star to portray Mycroft Holmes.
Per Deadline, Max Irons has officially been cast as Sherlock Holmes’ older brother, Mycroft Holmes. Irons is best known for starring as Joe Turner in the series Condor and as Jared Howe in the 2013 film, The Host. Irons joins an elite cast which includes Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Sherlock Holmes, Dónal Finn as James Moriarty, Joseph Fiennes as Silas Holmes, Natascha McElhone as Cordelia Holmes, Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou’an, and Colin Firth as Sir Bucephalus Hodge.
Based on the series of novels written by Andy Lane, Ritchie’s Young Sherlock is described as “as an irreverent, action-packed origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective in a re-imagining of this iconic character. At age 19, Sherlock Holmes (Tiffin) is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever.” Ritchie serves as executive producer and director for the series, which is written and executive produced by the series showrunner Matthew Parkhill.
Guy Ritchie Returns to the World of Sherlock Holmes
Though many fans have clamored for Ritchie to return to the universe of Sherlock Holmes, the upcoming Prime Video series may not be what they expected. Ritchie had previously directed two Sherlock Holmes films with Robert Downey Jr. starring as the titular character, and both were tremendously successful. Anchored by the delightful chemistry between Downey Jr. and Jude Law, both films were well received by critics and fans alike, and both performed well at the box office. However, audiences are still waiting on a potential third film, despite the plethora of rumors over the years that the project was still alive.
According to a previous report, Susan Downey, who served as producer for both of Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes films, recently addressed the status of Sherlock Holmes 3 saying it was “still very much alive in our hearts,” but that all parties involved felt the third film needed a “great story” to bring everyone back together again. With Ritchie now putting all his efforts into the Prime Video series, it remains even more unclear whether a third film will ever happen.
There is no official release date for Young Sherlock yet.
