Pep Guardiola has provided an update on Kevin De Bruyne ahead of Manchester City’s match with Newcastle United on Saturday.
The injury bug is starting to bite Manchester City and it’s little surprise given the ever-increasing workload on players.
Pep Guardiola’s side were forced to play just 48 hours after their gruelling 2-2 with Arsenal when they took on Watford on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup.
While City emerged from that game unscathed, they currently have four players sidelined including important midfield duo Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne.
Here is the latest news the injured stars ahead of City vs Newcastle and when they could be back in action.
Rodri
The outcome nobody ever wanted to see but feared would has finally come to pass, with Rodri suffering a serious injury.
The crucial midfielder hobbled off the field after 20 minutes against Arsenal and the full extent of the injury has now been confirmed.
Rodri has suffered an ACL tear as well as meniscus damage and will not play again this season.
Latest update: City said on September 25: “Manchester City FC can confirm that Rodri has suffered a ligament injury to his right knee.
“The midfielder travelled to Spain to seek specialist consultation this week, following initial tests in Manchester.
“Assessment remains ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the injury and expected prognosis.”
Guardiola said on September 27: “Good surgery this morning, ACL and some meniscus.
“So next season he will be here. This season is over. Yeah, unfortunately, he got the worst but it is what it is. At this level it happens, we’re here to support his recovery step by step and move forward.”
Potential return date: June 2025
Kevin De Bruyne
City’s midfield has been thrown into disarray as Kevin De Bruyne is sidelined as well as Rodri.
The brilliant Belgian has missed the last two matches with a groin strain he suffered against Inter in the opening Champions League fixture.
It doesn’t sound like a serious injury but De Bruyne wasn’t fit to face Arsenal and he will not play this weekend, either.
Latest update: Guardiola said on September 27: “No [will he be available?].
“[When will he be?] I don’t know. Before maybe the international break or after the international break we will see.”
Potential return date: October 5, vs Fulham
Nathan Ake
Nathan Ake hadn’t played much at the start of the season but his injury still came as a blow and has reduced Guardiola’s defensive options.
The Dutchman pulled up with a painful hamstring injury while playing for the Netherlands against Germany and won’t be back until after the next international break.
Latest update: Guardiola said on September 13: “Injured. I think it will be until the next international break.
“We are unlucky with Nathan in the international team, every time he goes there he comes back injured.”
Potential return date: October 20 vs Wolves
Oscar Bobb
Oscar Bobb looked set to firmly establish himself in the first team at the start of the season but was struck down before the campaign even truly began.
The Norwegian playmaker fractured his leg in training, which has put him on the shelf for four months.
Latest update: Guardiola said on August 16: “It was in the training session. Unfortunately, he had a big impact and got injured.
“He is having surgery this afternoon. Hopefully, it will go well, and he will be back in 3-4 months.”
Potential return date: December 4
