Benefitting from the extended weekend, Stree 2 managed to score a huge first weekend collection over the five-day weekend. It scored $32.8 million in India and $38.9 million globally in the first five days.
Horror-comedy universe of Maddock Films
The first film, Stree came out in 2018 and proved to be a surprise hit. The film critiqued patriarchal mindsets and boasted of strong performances by the lead cast including Rao, Kapoor, Tripathi, Banerjee and Khurrana. A female spirit abducted lusty men in the first film while a headless male spirit abducts women in the second one. The producers made two more horror-comedies – Bhediya and Munjya – before they moved on to the Stree sequel. Munjya, too, was a surprise hit at the box office when it released earlier this year. Stree 2 is the fourth movie in Maddock’s horror-comedy universe.
Maddock Films was founded by Dinesh Vijan in 2005. It has been the force behind many popular and critically-acclaimed movies including Cocktail, Hindi Medium, Luka Chuppi, Bala, Mimi, Dasvi, Teri Baaton Main Aisa Uljha Jiya, apart from the four horror-comedy films that have redefined the genre in Hindi cinema. The production house is also behind the new Netflix film Sector 36 which ranked third on the platform list of most-watched non-English films across the globe for the week ending September 15.
Road ahead for Stree 2
With a single fresh, big-ticket release (Yudhra) for Hindi films on Spetember 20, Stree 2 is poised to continue ruling the ticket windows in India. Additionally, the National Cinema Day announced by the Multiplex Association of India is likely to add momentum to the collections. Cinephiles can enjoy movies at a nominal rate of $1.2 on September 20 on National Cinema Day. Major cinema halls including PVR INOX, Miraj Cinemas, Movie Time and Cinepolis will be hosting National Cinema Day in India on September 20. The third film in Stree franchise was earlier announced and is currently being developed.
