The Runcorn constituents disgusted by their brawling MP

Amesbury is thought to have been enjoying live music on Friday night at the Queen’s Head, a pub on the local high street, which is lined with thatched cottages and red-brick local businesses, before the weekend’s scuffle took place. “We had an acoustic player,” says the manager, “it was very crowded and busy.”

The Queen’s Head closes at around 11pm, after which the MP for Runcorn and Helsby is believed to have walked around the corner to the Cholmondeley Arms, a smaller pub which stays open until 2am. When that also closed its doors, Amesbury headed towards a nearby taxi rank, where the confrontation with his constituent took place.

Footage initially posted online on Saturday showed Amesbury jabbing a finger in his constituent’s face, shouting ‘You won’t ever threaten me again, will you’.

Then another video published on Sunday appeared to show Amesbury knocking a man to the ground and repeatedly striking him thereafter.

He said he had contacted police after the incident, which took place after he “felt threatened following an evening out with friends.”

The man in the footage who was allegedly punched to the ground by Amesbury has since been named. Paul Fellows, 42, had been talking to the MP about the temporary closure of a local bridge before the altercation took place, according to a witness cited by The Times. The pair were also said to have discussed the winter fuel allowance.

Amesbury has since been suspended by the Labour Party. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said Labour had “moved very swiftly” to respond, admitting the footage from the weekend was “shocking”.
